Our first skills practice of the season went well last Saturday. We all took this great opportunity to see what we remember from last year and to see what we want to work on this year. These practices are fun and there’s so much to learn from each other.
The water is slowly warming up, but it is still a bit chilly, so I’m reposting Jane’s advice here.
Kayakers —
If you haven’t joined us in prior years, this is an informal practice; we help each other; offer a supportive opportunity to learn some new skills and practice those that have rusted out over the winter. The water temp is about 64 but the air can be cool; so can the wind; wear a splash jacket at the least. If you’d like to practice rescues, you’ll want to dress for immersion. Getting into the water is your choice. We may also work on some strokes. It depends on the flow of the morning. We’re usually out for about 2 hours and generally have lunch afterwards at the deli.
Parking is available in the dirt lot across the street from Aqua Adventures. Please arrive by 8:15 to organize your boat and gear. We’ll leave Aqua Adventures’ dock at 8:45 am sharp and head over to Mariner’s Basin.
If you’re launching from their dock, please do not use their launch pad; launch and return from the dock areas at the bottom of the ramp and use the cleats to drop into your boat.
You’re welcome to join us if you’d like to brush up on your skills.
As a reminder, you’re responsible for your own safety so all attendees need to be able to self-rescue
If you choose to launch from a different location, we will be paddling over to Mariner’s Cove over by Mission Point Park.
