Each month a top secret selection committee of the club chooses club
members to receive special awards. These awards are given to members
who exemplify the special skills highlighted below.
As you can see this is a fun club tradition that is woefully OUT OF DATE!
Let's kick off Awards 2006 with some great nominations (and pictures).
Send in your best ideas, or the committee will find pictures of YOU and use those!
If you know of anyone deserving of any of these special awards, send an
e-mail to Simon Swift. Don't assume
someone else will nominate the club member!
Golden Band-Aid Award Winner
This award goes to the member most in need of a Golden Band-aid caused by
bodily injury to themselves.
No One
No award winner for December.
Past winners include:
Greg Knight (November 2000)
Greg tried to walk through a glass door with a double kayak on his head (ouch!).
Carol Snyder (July 2000)
Carol won this award for the black eye she got while climbing rocks to
a hot spring during the club Black Canyon trip in May. Always check your
footing!
Kathy and George Correa (November 1999)
Kathy and George won this for enduring a 'near death experience' on the Baja Surf Safari weekend.
Anne Ainsworth (September 1999)
Anne won this for attempting a do-it-yourself nose job, using only her helmet, and the bottom of the Kern River.
Golden Duct Tape Award Winner
This award goes to the member most in need of Golden Duct Tape to repair
damage to equipment (not necessarily their own).
Simon Swift
On his recent outing to Morro Bay,
Simon broke a brand new, first-time-ever- used sea kayak paddle. The
details of exact breakage mechanism are a little hazy (Simon was not
at the meeting to clarify the incident). What is known is Simon broke
the paddle while doing a beach landing in small surf. Whether the
paddle got wedged between the boat and the sand, or the paddle broke
while Simon was using it to push off the bottom is unclear.
Past winners include:
Kevin Staples (November 1999)
Kevin won this for breaking a paddle while surfing a big wave on the Baja Surf
Safari.
Mike Vest (October 1999)
Mike won this for wrapping his kayak around a concrete post and losing a paddle
while surfing at San Onofre.
Steve Bogdan (July 1999)
Steve won this for loosing three kayaks and a roof rack from his Ford Expedition
while driving through a dust devil at 80 MPH.
Golden Goggle Award Winner
This award goes to the member most in need of Golden Goggles as demonstrated
by swimming out of their kayak.
Gilbert Siegel
The incident which won Gilbert
the award, occurred during the Thanksgiving day Bay-to-Bay paddle
organized by Jennifer Kleck and Greg Knight. Gilbert has very little
boat time in a sea kayak. While attempting to catch a wave at the
entrance of San Diego Bay, Gilbert did a late take-off. Testimony
from eye-witnesses concur that when the sea-kayak became vertical,
90% of the 16 ft. hull was out of the water. Since Gilbert was unable
to reach the water with his paddle to do a pirouette, he went upside
down, and subsequently swam. Sea kayaks don't maneuver quite as well
as whitewater kayaks in the surf.
Past winners include:
Margo ORoark (November 2000)
Margo swam 4 times during the Derek Hutchinson clinic.
Penny Frost (October 2000)
Penny won this for swimming during a kayak polo game after hand rolling up and over another kayak before exiting her boat.
Matt O'Berry (July 2000)
Matt won this award for swimming on back to back nights, first during
kayak polo and then surfing the following night.
Mike Vest (May 2000)
Mike is the club's first "triple crown" winner for swimming
- while at the San Diego Paddlesurf Festival (but not during the actual competition),
- on the Kern River through Limestone during the Kern River Festival, and
- in Fort Collins, CO during the Kayak Polo National Competition.

Mike Vest proudly displays his Golden Goggles, along with custom made "Team Riot" swim floats.
Simon Swift (November 1999)
Simon won this award for swimming after getting sucked from his boat in Baja.
Greg Knight (August 1999)
Greg won this award for attempting to 'swap spit' with Kevin Staples while
trying to drown each other following a polo match.
