San Diego Area Surf Spots
This is by no means an all-inclusive list. These are popular spots that you may find club members at.
Sunset Cliffs - intermediate to advanced surf. Entry and exit
usually requires launching/landing from low outcroppings on the cliffs while
timing the swell. Also, since there is no beach to speak of, swimming is
not an option. Not a spot for the timid.
Marine Room - small to intermediate surf suitable for beginners or
just playing around.
Princess - A small cove to the south of Marine Room.
It has moderate surf, sometimes breaking, rocky beach for intermediate surfers.
North of Scripps Pier - A popular surf area for many club members.
Few surf boarders surf north of the pier, and they are generally newbies.
Good breaks.
Black's Beach - A further paddle to the north further up the beach from
the Scripps Pier area. A popular board surfing spot and a relatively easy
paddle to get to. These waters are full of surfers so yield to your smaller
cousins. The surf here varies from a difficult beginner to no way am I
bringing my boat in there.
San Onofre Kayak Beach - An excellent surf spot on the southern end of
the San Onofre State Beach (just north of the nuclear power plant). There
are certain rules and areas that must be obeyed to keep this open for kayakers.
See the San Onofre Surf
Kayak Association
page for more information.
Surf Etiquette & Rules of the Road
If you are new to kayak surfing, please do everyone a favor and read through some of this material.
Nothing gives kayakers a worse rap than a kayaker surfing who doesn't know proper surfing etiquette,
especially if board surfers are near. Better yet, hook up with other surf kayakers and learn the basics
while meeting some new friends.
